up front theatre
i had a very classic jeff gladstone day yesterday. i woke up and rode my pink kuahara to the roundhouse to rehearse my fringe show with tom jones. we did mask scenes, puppetry with duck puppets we found on the wall, played songs we'd written, improvised a word-at-a-time, lists, w-a-a-t writing, talked about the war in Lebanon, and had lunch. our fringe show will be called "freestyle" and it's a jazz inspired night of variety theatre.
Then i rode up the hill to record the score to a 1 minute film called "open season". guitar and kazoo.
on an invitation and a whim, myself and roger fredericks rented a car and drove to Bellingham Washington to play in the 2 year anniversary party at the Up Front Theatre. All the young improvisors were there and some of them are getting quite good. Ryan Stiles of course was there, and it was the first time i got to really see him or play with him. Having not really liked the whose line show.. i was surprisingly surprised. He is amazing! I see why he is one of the best in the world. What a generous and gracious improvisor, driving and lifting scenes out of the muck when he had too, and playing support when that was all that was required.... what a great theatre and community and audience that is being nurtured down there. Congratulations everyone!.
Roger as usual was no slump himself, we represented the canadian contingent well, carrying on the night at the local pub, then enjoying the company of rebecca the photographer.
We drove back the next morning after eggs and ice cream, so i could make 3 writing meetings for different theatre projects on the go....
